Episode 39: Meet Who Is Quietly Changing Northern Virginia

In this special episode of the We're Good Podcast, host Lee Ann Necessary Brownlee brings listeners inside the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia's Impact Celebration, where lives are being changed through the power of generosity, innovation, and community.

The episode begins with Jackie Klein of the White House Farm Foundation, whose family's commitment to environmental stewardship has already awarded nearly $60,000 in scholarships to aspiring environmental leaders. One of those leaders is Nora McCormick, an 18-year-old whose scientific curiosity has taken her from studying anti-aging biochemistry to investigating a hidden environmental crisis threatening wildlife across Virginia. Inspired by a single injured turkey vulture, Nora is pursuing research that could help protect entire ecosystems while preparing for a future in science. Their remarkable journey unfolds throughout the opening segment.

The episode also features Dr. Stan Jones, CEO of ACTS (Action in Community Through Service), where teams are responding to crises many families never imagined they would face. ACTS provides food to thousands of families each year, helps survivors of domestic violence find safety, and works to move neighbors from homelessness to stability and hope. Their mission and growing needs are highlighted throughout the conversation.

Listeners will also meet Dr. Luis Ortiz, Assistant Professor at George Mason University and Co-Director of the Virginia Climate Center, where researchers are helping communities confront some of the most pressing challenges of our time. From worsening droughts and extreme weather to threats facing farmers, infrastructure, and vulnerable communities, the Virginia Climate Center is working to ensure the Commonwealth is prepared.

Behind every thriving community are people quietly fighting hunger, protecting vulnerable families, preserving the environment, and investing in the next generation. And that ripple effect is building a Northern Virginia that works for everyone thanks to the generous support through CFNOVA.
