Episode 40: From Pop-Up Experiments to a Regional Landmark: The Northern Virginia Science Center Story
In this inspiring episode of the We’re Good Podcast, host Lee Ann Necessary Brownlee sits down with CEO, Nene Spivy and Community Programs Manager, Sue Fajer to take listeners behind the scenes of the ambitious vision for the Northern Virginia Science Center—a transformative, $120 million public private project poised to redefine STEM education and community engagement in the region.
What began as a grassroots effort led by passionate parents and volunteers has evolved into a decades-long journey to fill a critical gap: Northern Virginia, one of the largest and most affluent regions in the U.S., lacked a hands-on science center for children and families. Through persistence, innovation, and community support, the organization began as a “museum without walls,” serving over 25,000 people annually. Eleven years ago they doubled capacity by opening the Children’s Science Center Lab, the first science center in the region. A place to experiment in immersive STEM experiences for school groups, visitors while also providing a place to learn from the community and grow.
Now, that foundation is scaling into something far greater. The upcoming Northern Virginia Science Center will feature five expansive galleries, including the groundbreaking “Flow” exhibit, where visitors explore how water, light, sound, and data move through the world. Designed as a “museum for all,” the center will dramatically expand access—serving over 100 Title I schools and reaching hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
This episode highlights not just the logistical challenges—securing land, funding, and public-private partnerships—but the human impact. From students inspired to pursue aerospace engineering to young volunteers becoming entrepreneurs, the ripple effects of hands-on STEM education are profound and lasting.
More than a science center, this is a story about community, opportunity, and the power of curiosity. As Northern Virginia prepares for this landmark institution, one thing is clear: investing in experiential learning today is shaping the innovators, leaders, and problem-solvers of tomorrow.
